Peter Schaefer (born July 12, 1977 in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan, Canada) is a Canadian ice hockey left winger. He currently plays for the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators. He was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the Senators in 2002 for Sami Salo.
Apart from playing a solid all-around game, Schaefer is best known to Senator fans for his amazing play along the boards and PK plays. In the 2005-2006 season, Schaefer set career highs in goals, assists, and points.
In the 2006-2007 season, on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, in a losing effort 6-2, when the Senators were taking too many penalties, as a "surrendering" sign, he put a towel on the blade of his stick, and waved it in the air. Eventually, Schaefer was fined $2500 by the NHL. Realizing he thought it was funny at the time, he said he'd like to have that back.
Peter has a younger brother, Nolan Schaefer, who is a goaltender for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
