Sir Peter E. Middleton GCB (born 1934 in Sheffield) is a famous British banker.

Peter Middleton was born in 1934 in Sheffield, an industrial city in South Yorkshire. His father was Harold Middleton [1]. He was educated at Sheffield City Grammar School and at Sheffield and Bristol Universities where he studied economics and statistics. He is an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School and was a visiting Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. He is a member of the Court of the Guild of International Bankers and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers. He currently lives in Kensington with his wife Connie. [2]

[edit] The Treasury
After National Service, Sir Peter joined HM Treasury where he had a long and distinguished career spanning 30 years, ultimately ascending to become permanent secretary from 1983 to 1991.
[edit] Barclays Bank
Sir Peter joined Barclays in 1991 as Group Deputy Chairman and Executive Chairman of BZW. He became Chairman of Barclays Capital following the reorganisation of BZW in October 1997 and was appointed Barclays Group Chairman in April 1999. During this time he was also a Board member of Bass PLC from 1992-2001 and General Accident (later CGU) from 1992-1995.

Sir Peter Middleton was appointed CEDR Chairman in September 2004 following his retirement as Group Chairman of Barclays.

Sir Peter is the current Chancellor of the University of Sheffield.

He is Deputy Chairman of United Utilities, Chairman of Sheffield Urban Regeneration Company (Sheffield One), Chancellor of Sheffield University and a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He is on the Board of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. In July 2004 he became President of the British Bankers' Association (BBA) and was appointed Chairman of Camelot Group plc in September 2004.
