Peter Daltrey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peter Daltrey is a British musician. He was lead singer and chief songwriter for the bands Kaleidoscope and Fairfield Parlour, and has also achieved solo success.
After the band`s demise Peter concentrated on his artwork and solo recording projects. His first album, `Dream On` (Voiceprint VP182), was released on the British Voiceprint label in 1995. This was soon followed by two successful albums released in Japan: `English Roses` (Evangel EV001-1995) and `When we were Indians` (Evangel EV003 - 1996).
In 1997 Peter worked with Universal Records on the compilation, `Dive into Yesterday` (Fontana 534003-02), a collection of tracks from Kaleidoscope`s two seminal Sixties albums. The band had re-emerged from obscurity with many reissues of their albums beginning in 1987 -- and in 1991 their famous `lost` double concept album, `White-Faced Lady` was finally released (UFO BFTP 001).
In 1997 Peter was invited by the Dutch guitar-master Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon/Vengeance) to work with him on his double concept album, `Into The Electric Castle.` Peter wrote and narrated the story and contributed to two titles on the successful album, (Transmission TM-014 International 1998).
A life-long fan of Clifford Ward, Peter was guest of honour at the October '98 convention where he delivered a speech of appreciation. Tragically, the much-loved singer died in December 2001.
Even more tragic for the band was the death of their bass guitarist, Steve Clark in the early hours of 1 May 1999, hit by a taxi whilst crossing Chelsea Bridge. At the funeral two weeks later the surviving members of the band performed an acoustic version of `Aries.`
Blueprint Records released a collection of Peter`s best solo work in 1999 on, `Candy:The Best of Peter Daltrey` (Blueprint BP304CD.)
The turn of the century saw the release of Peter`s nostalgic album, `Tambourine Days` (Chelsea Records CDCR 000110) with the moving title track looking back fondly at his earlier career and the many friends who had shared that long frustrating road. Chelsea Records
It was in this year that Peter began what would be a fruitful collaboration with the New Orleans-based singer-songwriter, Damien Youth. Their first album, `Nevergreen` (Chelsea Records CDCR 002110) was released in December 2000. In spite of the transatlantic connection, `Nevergreen` is a quintessentially English album telling the story of a doomed young girl born into a strange, mystical land. Peter drew on his skills as a writer and narrator to produce one of his most outstanding albums -- with Damien contributing a perfect acoustic landscape for Peter`s famous very English voice.
Not content to rest on his laurels Peter followed this with two more solo albums, `Heroine` (Chelsea Records CDCR 100110) in 2001 and `The Last Detail` (Chelsea Records CDCR 209010) in September 2002.
The prolific collaboration with Damien Youth continued in November the same year with the release of their second album, `Tattoo` (Chelsea Records CDCR 201110). Chelsea Records
Two months later Peter`s first solo single was released on Earworm Records, `(Love Song)For Annie/Gypsy Gypsy (with Damien Youth), (Earworm Records wormss12).
Then in April 2003 after the discovery of some ultra-rare acetates the band authorised their release, `Kaleidoscope - The Sidekicks Sessions` (CD Alchemy). In September further rare BBC recordings were released, `Please listen to the pictures` (Circle Records CPWL/CPWC 104) -- its cover art featuring many rare photographs and clippings from Peter`s extensive band archive.
The following month Peter released what many consider his most adventurous work, `Pittsburg Warhola` (Chelsea Records CDCR 300110) under the nome de plume, Link Bekka. Peter broke the mould with this outrageous album of narration and the skilful use of samples, producing a mesmeric and haunting examination of our modern world -- with a particularly revealing spotlight on America and its consumerist gung-ho culture.
Now Peter went back to his roots when he and Damien Youth formed a band, The Morning Set. Inspired by this noisy bunch of reprobates the song-writing was soon in full flow and the band released their first album, the eponymous `The Morning Set,` at the end of 2006.
