Peter Checkland

British academic Peter Checkland (1930 - ) is the developer of soft systems methodology (SSM) in the field of systems thinking.
Peter Checkland was Professor of Systems at the Lancaster University. Prior to that he worked in industry for 15 years. He is the author of three books on the Soft Systems Methodology:
- Systems Thinking, Systems Practice, (1981) Wiley [rev 1999 ed]
- Soft Systems in Action, (1990) Wiley (with Jim Scholes) [rev 1999 ed]
- Information, Systems and Information Systems, (1998) Wiley (with Sue Holwell)
Soft Systems Methodology emerged from the failure of the application of systems engineering in Management. Soft Systems is a branch of systems thinking.
