Peter C. Mancall

Peter Mancall (born 18 June 1959 in Philadelphia, PA) is a Professor at the University of Southern California and an early American Historian. His research and teaching emphasis are on the lives of Native Americans and Native American Indians.
Mancell was a visiting Assistant Professor of History at Connecticut College from 1986 to 1987. He was a Lecturer on History and Literature at Harvard University from 1987 to 1989. He advanced from an Assistant Professor to an Associate professor at the University of Kansas, after publishing his second book, Deadly Medicine: Indians and Alcohol in Early America in 1997. His next professional move was from Kansas to the University of Southern California in 2001. In 2005, Mancall began to teach Anthropology along with History at USC.
Mancall helped create the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute in 2003. Currently, Mancall is the Director of the Institute. Also, Mancall has written 4 books (one co-written) since his first publication in 1991, Valley of Oppurtunity: Economic Culture along the Upper Susquehanna, 1700-1800.
Mancall attended Oberlin college in the early eighties and received an A.B. in 1981. He received an A.M. in history from Harvard University in 1982 and a Ph.D. in history from Harvard in 1986.
Mancall has edited eight books and written around forty book reviews in such journals as American Historical Review, Journal of American History, Journal of Economic History, Journal of the Early Republic, and many others. Currently, Mancall is working on two books titled “Interpreters of Nature in the sixteenth-Century Atlantic World” and “Hudson’s Fatal Journey”.
