Peter Black (Welsh politician)

Peter Black (born 1960) is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician, and Member of the Welsh Assembly for South Wales West Region.

He is currently chairman of the Welsh Assembly Education Select Committee, and is the education spokesman for his party in Wales.

He was educated at Wirral Grammer School for Boys and the University of Wales, Swansea, graduating in English and History. A Councillor for the Cwmbwrla ward on Swansea City Council, he was leader of the Liberal Democrat Group 1984-99. He previously worked as a research assistant for West Glamorgan Social Services and for the Land Registry for Wales. He is a past Chair of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and of the Party's Finance and Administration Committee.

Peter Black fought Swansea East at the Assembly elections in 1999 and 2003, but entered the Assembly as the lead candidate on the Welsh Liberal Democrat regional list for South Wales West. A former Deputy Minister in the coalition administration, he now chairs the Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills Committee. He also sits on the House Committee and South West Wales Regional Commitee and is a member of the Shadow Assembly Commission preparing for implementation of the Government of Wales Act 2006.

Peter is married and enjoys films, theatre and poetry.

After Charles Kennedy's resignation in 2006, Black supported Simon Hughes in the ensuing leadership contest.
