[edit] Demographics

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Perungalathur had a population of 19,343 (it is close to 50,000 as of Nov 2006). Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Perungalathur has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 79%. In Perungalathur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Perungalathur, though widely named for many places, is actually divided into Srinivasa Nagar, a prominent location next to the Railway Station, Old Perungalathur, easily accessible from Tambaram, Mudichur Area and couple of small villages like GunduMedu etc.

The whole area has been developed because of the Standard Motor Factory which used to be a big employer until the early 80's. Initially, in the 1950s 4 or 5 people boldly came to this village, which is close to Vandalor Zoo and was then remotely accessible by bus / train.

Subsequently, many people who worked in the Standard Motor Factory, moved to this place and in the early 1980's this place started getting heavily populated and there is no open land available for constructing a home all available lands have been sold out.

The standard motor factory is closed now and the property comprising of machinery, factory has been purchased by Sriram properties, they have planned to build a massive IT park, shopping mall, residential apartments with landscaping etc. They have sold all the rusting machinery and other tools and equipment from the factory and have erected a big cutout with IT park advertisement which can be seen from the main GST road while passing through the railway station gate.

One of the main attractions of this place is the Vedanta Desika Srinivasa Temple, Pancha Mookam Anjaneyar Temple, The Kanchi Kamatchi Temple, The Soorathamman Temple, Karumaari Amman Temple etc, The CSI church, Infant Jesus Church and there is a Muslim Dargah at old perungalatur. The Anuragh Theatre (which is now closed) which showed Adult films was also an interesting piece of information to giggle about Perungalathur.

Perungalathur has good schools like St. Anne's, St. Johns and lots of other small convents and government schools. Children from nearby villages such as Sadhanandhapuram and Nedungundram are dependent on the schools in Perungalathur. While, it now boasts of a very good bus / railway connectivity, it still needs improvements with regard to the condition of roads etc. Perungalathur is well connected by Broad Gauge line to Chennai city, and all trains bound to south Tamil Nadu travel by this route. Perungalathur is hub for most of the tourist buses that travel towards to the south Tamil Nadu and all major tourist bus service operators have an office on the main GST road opposite to first railway gate.

Perungalathur with its vast greenery receives lot of rainfall and hence there is no water shortage here. The massive stretch of Mango, Coconut, Palm trees can be seen very clearly from the Chennai by pass bridge.

There are two railway gates, one the primary gate which leads the road to Vedanta Desika Srinivasa Temple (about 1/2 kilometre from the railway gate). This road is one of the busiest roads and in the evenings you can find a lot of people rushing down from trains / buses to their home. The second railway gate is a furlong ahead which leads to Kamakshi Amman Temple quite near to the station.

The nearest town is Tambaram where there are good schools, colleges, theatres, restaurants etc.,
