Pershing Square (Los Angeles)

Pershing Square is a public park in downtown Los Angeles, California. It was signed into being in 1866 by former Mayor Cristobal Aguilar. At the time, Pershing Square was called La Plaza Abaja ("The Lower Plaza"). However, it was renamed Pershing Square in 1918 in honor of General John J. Pershing.

The park was first renovated in 1911. Subsequent renovations have included a time in the 1950s, when a car garage was built beneath it; and again in 1994 when the City of Los Angeles completely redesigned and rededicated the facility.

The park is exactly one block in size. It is bounded by 5th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east, and Olive Street to the west. There is a large fountain located in the southeastern corner of Pershing Square.
