Perseus molecular cloud
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Perseus molecular cloud is a a nearby (600 ly) Giant Molecular Cloud in the constellation of Pereus and contains over 10,000 solar masses of gas and dust covering an area of 6 by 2 degrees. Unlike the Orion molecular cloud it is almost invisible apart from two regions of low mass formation IC348 and NGC1333. Meanwhile it is very bright in the far infrared and shows a curious ring structure in maps made by the IRAS satellite. The infrared emission comes from the dust being heated by stars in and around the cloud.
Recently detected by the COSMOSOMAS at microwave frequencies as a source of anomalous "spinning dust" emission.
