Perins School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perins School — A Community Sports College is a community sports college and secondary school located in New Alresford, Hants, England. It is commonly referred to as Perins School, and its previous name was Perins Community School. The school was granted specialist status for leading the field in the area of sports within Hampshire. The school has received an award for improved performance, and its size has increased significantly as more students are attracted by its higher reputation.

The school consists of the blocks: Pascal(Maths and English) Eliot(Geography, Art, ICT, RE and sports office) Rousseau (Modern foreign languages, RE and History) Ibsen (Music) Newton (Science) Stephenson(DT and Food Technology/Textiles) If you look at the bold words, first letters it spells out Perins. It also has The Hub which includes two drama studios and the Evolution sports block with a gym and PE classroom.

As of 2007, the head teacher is Mrs. Janice Bernard, who took up her post in September 2000. The previous head teacher, who presided over significant improvements in performance, was in post from 1994. In 2000, OFSTED reported that pupils' attainment had risen from "above average" to "well above average". The school has 948 students in the 2004-2005 school year, with 961 anticipated for the next year. [1]. The number of students enrolled at Perins has grown consistently in recent years. As recently as 2001 there were only 761 students enrolled.

In recognition of the school's improvement, in 2000 British Prime Minister Tony Blair presented the head teacher with an award for the school as one of the 36 most improved in the country over four years. He described the heads as "entrepreneurs of the new century".

The school provides important cultural and sporting facilities for the town and the surrounding area. The town's "facilities group" reports that its Main Hall compensates for the relatively limited capacity of Alresford Town Hall, but notes that school facilities are not always exploited to capacity. The local community is also expected to benefit from the new dance studio, fitness suite, and second sport hall which has recently been developed due to the new "sport college" status. In 2004 Perins also shared a National Lottery grant of £151,000 to develop sports facilities in Hampshire, splitting the money with another Sports College in Eastleigh, in the south of the county. Perins will soon have a science status which is sure to improve the school in the future.

Cheriton Primary, Four Marks Primary, Ropley Primary, Preston Candover Primary and Sun Hill Junior Schools feed into Perins School.

Because Perins School is a sports college (status achieved in 2002), a new sports block has been built. The new sports block has a dance studio complete with plasma tv and dvd player, a new gym called Evolution, 1 classroom and changing rooms. Some students have been unimpressed with the management of the new complex, this is because they have restricted access.

[edit] Moodle

Perins School has implemented a new technology called Moodle. Moodle is a Web Based Course Management System that students can use to download homework and classwork resources. The system is running on a Apache 2.0.4 Server With PHP And LDAP server authentication. Certain people in the school with rights can upload things to Moodle from the main NAVAHO directory. These people are referred to as Moodle 'Gurus' and are designated a subject at the start of the academic year. These 'Gurus' have to stick to that subject and go to departmental meetings to discuss changes to Moodle in their particular department area.
