[edit] Will it play in Peoria

Has anyone outside of central Illinois EVER heard this stupid expression? As a (greater) Peoria native, I've heard it many times, but I've never seen it used in any remote form of pop culture, ever. It seems like a way for locals, in denial that they would be living in a cornfield if it wasn't for a certain manufacturer of yellow tractors, to think they live in a more significant part of America than they really do. I think we should stop embarassing ourselves and remove it from the article, pronto. Who's with me?

I was watching a laurel and hardy movie Circa 1940? Hardy says "lets go back to Peoria" at the end of the movie. Peoria was a well known theater town in that day. The place was a mob 'vacation' spot. Chicago gangsters came down here to get away from conflict. Peoria was neutral territory. That is where all the money for theater shows came from. Regardless, it is an historical fact that Will it play in Peoria? was a commonly used phrase during the vaudeville era. Civic pride or embarrassment aside. George 12:01, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sam Kinison

I believe Sam Kinison was actually from East Peoria, and certainly went to East Peoria Community High School, but is widely reported to be "from Peoria". Probably needs some research to determine whether he lived in Peoria or just was associated with it because nobody outside of Central Illinois cared about the distinction. --Closeapple 06:32, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC

I have lived in Peoria county most of my life, Sam Kinison is from East Peoria.George 02:35, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lead photo

It appears to be a postcard, and has no licensing details. It would be good if either we got a GFDL photo or some details on this one.
brenneman(t)(c) 23:20, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

It's certainly copyrighted, I assume the pic was downloaded from http://www.duryea-peoria.com/now&thn2.htm , there is an email address on that site for Dr. Joe Couri who is the copyright holder, perhaps someone can email him. Suppafly 18:37, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Can someone post a photo of Downtown Peoria preferably at night. there are several photos available tat are quite attractive however I do not know how to do this or obtain them?

It's not a matter of figuring out how to upload a nice picture. The trick is finding a nice photo that isn't copyrighted. Rklawton 16:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Factually Correct

Does anyone know if the edits by 167.219.0.143 are factually correct? Suppafly 18:12, 29 September 2005 (UTC) They are correcct based on census information reported in both the Peoria Journal Star, and WMBD websites when census was conducted.

Some of the stats mentioned on http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=6555 contradict some of the numbers in this article. Suppafly 18:14, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

The link mentioned is for Peoria County. The stats are from the US Census for City of Peoria, which is only part of the County. The MSA was recently updated to include Stark and Marshall counties based on 2000 census tracking.

[edit] External Links

Why is both external links Discover Peoria and The Greater Peoria Region keep on being eliminated from external links?? They actually provide excellent information on the community to supplement the article on Wikipedia.

I've noticed this but don't particularly have an opinion yet. But, for what it's worth, check out Wikipedia:External links for more info. Friday (talk) 19:10, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Upon looking a bit more, I don't see anything blatantly inappropriate about these links myself. BTW, if you sign up for an account, it'll be easier to communicate with others. Friday (talk) 19:22, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Ohh, bad brenneman. I just deleted them again and then saw this discussion, sorry. Normally I'd leave them on once there was some talk happening. As to why I've deleted them (a few times) both of these links are advertisements. Well done, informative perhaps, but advertisements none the less.
brenneman(t)(c) 03:45, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
I agree that these links appear to be advertisements more than informative resources. Suppafly 21:04, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Although there is some marketing ploy to theselinks, there is also additional factual information on the area. They were designed to promote and educate both non-Peorians and Peorians on the area. I don't see why this is inappropriate.

[edit] Bloody Mess

Bloody Mess isn't really notable outside of the peoria area. Suppafly 02:54, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

I'll buy that. I've replaced it with a reference to my own band removed the line mentioning him. Friday (talk) 14:46, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clean-up needed

The intro is too long, the lists have too many red-links and are too long, and the whole thing could use a copy-edit. I'm happy to bring the machete to bear, but I'd prefer if someone who knows more anything about the subject does it. - brenneman{T}{L} 09:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

ditto —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thechitowncubs (talkcontribs).
That first pre-section introduction wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the unwikified, non-NPOV type of stuff stuff in the middle paragraphs. (For those not native to Peoria: Nearly all of the expansions and improvements discussed in those unwikified paragraphs are still controversial, for example.) What's left could probably be moved to a new section. --Closeapple 09:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
While I am proud of my community, I felt the same way about the obvious advertising in the introductory paragraphs. The information can be used, but it needs to be reworded into a new secction, something like "Planned develpment for Peoria" George 02:43, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Central Illinois Agency on Aging, Inc.

This message is for Rklawton. Earlier today you deleted two postings. One included an addition of history to Peoria. I don't have a problem with that, as it is redundant. However, I wish to post my agency's services on this site, and do not believe it is appropriate that this be deleted. This is a non-profit agency devoted to assisting senior citizens, and a legitimate posting on this site. Please respond ASAP. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ciaa (talkcontribs).

Please notice that this encyclopedic article is about the city of Peoria, Illinois. It is not about your corporation's services. Following your logic, this article would quickly become the "Peoria Yellow Pages." Please also notice that we add new comments to the bottom of talk pages. Please also notice that we sign each posting with four tilde's. Rklawton 20:28, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Solar System Model

What no mention of the world's largest solar system model - and on Wikipedia no less? http://www.bradley.edu/las/phy/solar_system.html

[edit] Name This Peoria Landmark

Rklawton- I can see why you wouldn't want traditional blogs listed, but I think if you look into this, you may change your mind. It's not a blog, per se, but a living and breathing photo essay and discussion of Peoria. I suggest you look at the site again and read some of the comments. Please explain why this is not worthy, because I certainly don't understand.

http://namethispeorialandmark.blogpeoria.com/

I looked at your pics and I have to say that while interesting and even amusing, the blog isn't appropriate as a refernce. However, if you were to devote some webspace to only pictures of Peoria landmarks with appropriate captions :) that would be an excellent addition to the article.George 03:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

After 79 pics (I'm sure you looked at them all and read the user comments as well) with many more to come, I would like to know what you think are appropriate captions. The fact that people, through comments, are engaged and give insight into the history of Peoria should mean something to you.

Appropriate captions and pictures actually. For instance there is a pictureof someone's backyard, the entrance to the Air show and one of some aircraft. These are not landmarks. Also, WP is not intended to be loose and easygoing, like a blog. This is an encyclopedia and we want it to appear as such. I think if you read this you will understand better what is expected in external references. Please don't get discouraged, hang around and contribute, and when you have time read up on some of the information in the WP:Manual of style. Welcome to wikipedia! George 13:22, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough.

[edit] Missing history

Lots of missing history in the 20th century. I found some sources that indicated Peoria's population in 1974 was about 140,000, compared to 112,000 now. Interesting case study in population emigration that should be looked at. —Rob (talk) 17:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the article in a whole has more than a few structure issues. I'll try to address. —Rob (talk) 12:06, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Planned development?

Any reason this is here, and not in their respective sections? I'm moving the transportation sections first, but the rest are well on their way. I feel that chronologically grouping concepts in an article belongs in a newspaper, not necessarily Wikipedia. —Rob (talk) 16:28, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I seem to remember that the planned development was thrown into some other section by someone who didn't seem all that concerned about where it went, and having a new section was marginally less irritating than having it where it was before. I think this section has also been deleted or overhauled before as being non-NPOV, and somehow came back. I agree that whichever parts (if any) of the "Planned development" section can withstand Wikipedia guidelines for future events should probably be in the appropriate other sections. --Closeapple 22:38, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Subheadings

Does anybody agree that we should have some sections on Peoria radio and television market? The radio market has recently, and still is, undergoing some changes, as well as the television market, so now would be a good time.

Nevermind, I just looked at the article and found it. My bad. The updating here on Wikipedia is really good.

[edit] Intro

I moved a paragraph from the "Culture" section to the intro section. This is why most people have heard of Peoria; I think that it is important for the importance of the city to be stated in the beginning of the article, rather than the end.gloria 04:58, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Irish Community in and around Peoria

My grandparents and family genealogists told me that Peoria once had a very large, thriving community of Irish immigrants. I believe this was especially true after the famines. I have great- and great-great grandparents from Ireland who, after arriving in New York, Boston or Philadelphia, specifically headed to Peoria because of the large Irish community there. From family stories, it also seems that Irish Gaelic was still spoken in the community, at least for a period of time after the major waves of immigration. Yet I've found almost nothing about this on the Internet. If anyone knows of any other sources on this, I would love to hear them, and incorporate them into this, and other, Wikipedia articles. I will also go through our family records and see what I can add, but I'd like to have some additional sources on this. --Kathryn NicDhàna 21:48, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] David Ogden Stiers and Aaron Schneider

Just a note: Although David Ogden Stiers and Aaron Schneider may have been technically born in Peoria, they were also residents of nearby Chillicothe, Illinois. My parents remember that Stiers's father ran a hardware store in Chillicothe for a while, and Schneider graduated from IVC High School (class of 1983--he was a senior when I was a freshman, and my freshman yearbook has pictures of him). I copied these two over to the Chillicothe, Illinois page but didn't delete them here, pending verification that they also lived in Peoria as well as Chillicothe. --Photonex68 01:11, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Chillicothe is just north of the city of Peoria - so no real difference here. Should be in both.

[edit] Mayor

Saw that someone changed the name of the mayor. Probably someone fooling around. The real mayor is Jim Ardis and can be found to verify on any official Peoria website.

[edit] du Sable

This page says Maillet sold a Peoria house to du Sable in 1773. But the link for du Sable says he built his first house in Chicago in 1770. It says he sold that Chicago house to Kinzie in 1800 and went to Peoria. Does this mean he had houses in Chicago and Peoria for over 25 years? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.142.130.42 (talk) 21:54, 12 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] WikiProject Illinois Collaboration

[edit] Clean Up and Expansion

I am going to be working to try and clean up this article, and try and get it to at least GA status after feeling comfortable with how it looks. It has now been marked as being the Illinois Project collaboration. All new additions to the article from this point forward will have to be cited. Anything that isn't sited will in most cases be removed if a citation isn't found. We highly encourage people that watch this page to join us, and if anyone in the Peoria area would like to take photos, we are going to need some down the road (not as of this moment though).--Kranar drogin 10:41, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

One thing I noticed is that there are a lot of lists. These are going to have to be worked into the article. Also, we are going to have to create a seperate page for the history section since this is way too much info on the main page. Will get back at it tonight.--Kranar drogin 11:12, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Gotta finish up some of my townships I had started. The maps I created keep getting hit with "orphan" tags. So give me a couple days and I will be back. Will help a little bit as we go along.--Kranar drogin 19:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Famous People

I have removed the following list from the main page:

Some of them possibly could be kept, but for the most part if they do not have a Wiki entry, then they shouldn't be on the list. Not only that, but if you hvae a band, you don't need to list every single member either. Later, this list will be expanded into paragraphs instead of a lsit of people. So if anyone knows reasons why these people should stay, speak up now, or create a page for them and cite your sources. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 21:49, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

I am afraid of this article. The history section should be condensed to a section with no subsections. Kranar noted the lists. I still don't like those climate tables, that we put in here and Springfield, they are too bulky, something more like the historic pop. table, that blends into the text, would be much better. I don't know if all the future building tags are necessary, especially in an article on the city which really shouldn't say too much more than "the building is being built." IvoShandor 16:51, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually, the future building tags should be in the actual article about the building, if one is or has been created. If those were in all the other articles about the actual building, it just clutters up the pages as we see now. SO we should remove them, but in the paragraph about it we just say in there that it is in the processs of being built or is a project in the works.--Kranar drogin 17:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Here's an attempt at a taller version of the climate box. I'm sure the colors could be added, but I personally find them a bit loud. It can go on the left or right and the text should wrap around. Someone may want to double check the numbers since I typed them in manually. --Dual Freq 02:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
I do like that a lot better, is there a way to "scrunch" them a little closer together and not have a space between each line?--Kranar drogin 02:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
cellpadding="2" or cellpadding="1" seem to reduce the spacing. class="wikitable" instead of class="toccolours" would make gridlines. --Dual Freq 02:27, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
