The word pentamino has several meanings.

Pentamino comes from Greek pent (five) and amino (acid), a five aminoacids based polymer resins group.

Pentamino is a polyomino composed of five (Greek πέντε / pente) congruent squares, connected orthogonally. Prefix penta- is used same as in Tetragon, Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon, Tetraedar, Hexaedar, Octaedar, Dodecaedar, Tetramino, Hexamino etc.
Pentaminos may also be known as pentomino since Solomon W. Golomb's extensive works on tiling polyominoes, who also had "pentominoes" trademark (1008964 USPTO) and Pentomino company.
