Penny Lane East Tower
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Penny Lane East Tower is a twin office tower project to be built on the existing site of Calgary's historic Penny Lane Mall. Concerns have been raised over the destruction of the 94-year-old Penny Lane Mall, however the City of Calgary approved the project in March 2006[1] and the construction is scheduled to begin in 2009 (or as soon as new tenants are secured), and is to be completed within 7 years.
“ | The 40 (183.0m) story west tower and 49 (202.5m) story east tower structures will adopt a Rocky Mountain feel, featuring a western facing pale-green glass wall reminiscent of mountain waters and glaciers. The remainder of the building will embody a dark gray layered appearance consistent with mountainous rock.
The ground floor of the 2.0 million square foot buildings, will have room for retail stores, restaurants, and enough entertainment to replace the existing night-life. The second story is to be a three story high indoor park with a waterfall and lobbies for the two office towers, along with access to the city's Plus-15 pedestrian bridge system. Underground there will be a five-level parkade and space put aside for a future subway station. "We're going to put life back on the street in a retail space that you don't see in typical office buildings," says Wade Gibbs of Gibbs-Gage Architects, the firm designing for the project. |
