[edit] History
The suburb is residential, apart from a light industrial pocket to the south. The portion of the suburb west of Addison Road appears to be older than the central section. The eastern section of the suburb previously contained a migrant hostel which catered for a large influx of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s and 1980s, but was closed in the early 1990s after the influx had stopped, and was replaced with housing. A 5000 m² piece of land in Butler Avenue adjacent to Pennington Primary School was developed into the Phap Hoa Temple, which was opened in 1989.
[edit] Facilities
There is one public school in the area, the nearest are the public Pennington Primary School, and the R-2 campus of Pennington Junior Primary School, which are situated in separate pieces of land. There is a Catholic high school, Mount Carmel College, and primary school, St Joseph's School, Ottoway in the adjacent suburbs of Rosewater and Ottoway, respectively. Currently, the local zone high school is Woodville High School, in Woodville. There are a few shops and medical practices on Addison Road, but the closest shopping centre is the Arndale Shopping Centre. The Pennington Oval on Butler Avenue provides a venue for regular local sporting fixtures.
[edit] Transport
Grand Junction Road is served by the 301, 306, 307 and the T255 express bus services. Torrens Road is served by the 301 and 312 services. Park Avenue and Northgate Streets are served by the 312 service. The Finsbury railway line used to run parallel to Glenroy St, but this was removed in 1979 when the industrial activity in the area declined.
[edit] Demographics
Pennington is home to a large immigrant population. The initial settlement of the suburb coincided with a large wave of immigrants from Eastern Europe arriving in Australia, following the Second World War. Although most of their children have moved on, a large number of immigrant retirees still live in the area. Another wave of immigration occurred in the 1980s, when Vietnamese immigrants arrived after the Vietnam War. Currently, more than 50% of the population is from a non-English speaking background.
