Penmachno

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Penmachno is a village in the isolated upland valley of Cwm Penmachno, 4 miles south of Betws-y-Coed in the county of Conwy, north Wales.

It is renowned as the home of Bishop William Morgan (1545 - 1604), who lived in Y Wybrnant near the village. He was one of the leading scholars of his day, having mastered Hebrew in addition to Latin and Greek, and translated the Bible into Welsh.

The parish church of St Tudclud, although not ancient itself, contains five important Early Christian inscribed stone slabs dating from the fifth or sixth centuries, notably one commemorating Cantiorix as a citizen and magistrate of Gwynedd.
