Pekin, Iowa

Pekin, Iowa is a small town (population approximately 30) in southeastern Iowa. Since 1960, it has given its name to a regional school system. For eighteen years, only the high school students went to the regional school, which is located a mile south of Pekin, but in 1978, all grades, K-12, began to study at the regional school, with local buildings being permanently closed. The Pekin Community School System includes students from the towns of Richland, Packwood*, Ollie Hedrick, and Farson, as well as from the surrounding countryside. Pekin Comm. School is built on what used to be an Air Force base. The prevailing winds prevented planes from landing and taking off. The government sold the land to the school system for $1.00. The air strip is still being used today for a parking lot. Pekin has a student body of approx. 800 students. The faculty is committed to provideing the best education possible. Students come first. Pekin can also boast a very good athletic dept. The Pekin Panthers have gone to state in football, wrestlinig, girls and boys cross country, and boys and girls track. The Fine Arts Dept. and Speech has also done well. Students in the Art Dept. and Vocal have competed on the State level. Many Pekin graduates have gone on to college at Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, Simpson College, Central College, and others. Pekin science classes are taught by God himself, Davis Eidahl. Eidahl is the coolest old dude you'll ever meet. He coaches track and cross country and is known for making up swear words. He can also run forever, because he's God.
