The name Peitersen is Danish and is the surname of two families resident in Denmark. the name is a typical -sen name meaning the son of Peiter. Currently there are 314 people living in Denmark with the surname Peitersen[1]. The two Peitersen families comes from two different blodlines: the Lolland Peitersens and the Jutland Peitersens.

The Jutland Peitersens trace their blodline back to Peiter Josephsen with the nickname Peiter Hyld who was born in the north of Jutland at Egholm in 1809 or 1811, Peiter was married 3 or 4 times and his sons and daughters were all given the surname Peitersen, some of them were also given the name Hyld as a middle name.
[edit] The Alexander Nevsky shipwreck
The old Peiter Hyld earned his living as a fisherman and in 1868 he and another fisherman named Mads Sørensen was the leaders of the heroic rescue of the captain, passengers and crew of the shipwreck naval frigate Alexander Nevsky. Among the passengers of the Alexander Nevsky was the Russian Tsar Alexander II's 19 years old son the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich. Peiter Hyld earned a gold medal for the heroic saving of the Tsar's son. The gold medal and other artifacts relating to the Alexander Nevsky shipwreck can today be seen at the Lemvig Heritage Museum[2].

Of the Peitersens living in Denmark today should be mentioned media personality Erik Peitersen[3] and sports expert Birger Peitersen[4]. Erik Peitersen is a selftaught carpenter and artist who have participated in several home make over shows and other TV shows. Birger Peitersen is a soccer comentator and sports expert affiliated with the Department of Exercise and Sport Siences at University of Copenhagen.
