Peignoir
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A peignoir is a long nightgown for women usually sheer and made of chiffon. It is repeatedly mentioned in the novel The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, somewhat like a show of when she is awakening. Peignoir is also notably featured in the opening stanza of the poem Sunday Morning by Wallace Stevens and in opening chapters of the novel Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald where it is described in the context of beach attire. In "Fawlty Towers" a flirty Frenchwoman is called Madame Peignoir. Peignoirs are usually sold with matching panties but are often worn with no underwear.
