Pearland Independent School District

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pearland Independent School District is a school district based in Pearland, Texas, United States.

Pearland ISD serves most of the city of Pearland (including master-planned communities such as Silvercreek) and the city of Brookside Village.

Pearland ISD is operated by a seven-person elected Board of Trustees.

The Superintendent of Schools is Dr. Bonny Cain. She was named superintendent in 2000, when Dr. James Schleider retired.

Each house or residential area in Pearland is zoned to an elementary school (grades PK-4), a middle school (5-6), and a junior high school (7-8). There is only one ninth grade center that feeds into the one high school in Pearland ISD.

On November 7, 2006, a bond presented by the district passed with 69.84% of the votes being for the bond. A total of $115 million dollars has been alloted to construct a second high school, to be named after deceased Texas Representative and former Pearland High School teacher Glenda Dawson, on the west side of Pearland. The bond also calls for converting the facility that houses the Ninth Grade Center and Junior High South into a third high school, to be named after former Pearland ISD superintendent Robert Turner. Other items on the bond include the construction of two new elementary schools, technology upgrades, and improvements to current campuses.

Currently the school district is rated "Recognized" by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

[edit] Standardized dress

Since 2001, All Pearland ISD schools are required to enact a "standardized dress" code, which is similar to a school uniform; this is controversial among students and staff.
