Peñalara Nature Reserve

The Peñalara's Summit, Cirques and Lakes Nature Reserve (in Spanish: Parque Natural de la Cumbre, Circo y Lagunas de Peñalara) is a protected area of 768 hectares placed the central zone of the mountain system of Guadarrama (part of the mountainous axis called Central System), in Spain. It is located to the south-east of Peñalara's peak (2,430 m), in Rascafría's municipal term and northwest of the Community of Madrid. This natural space shelters Peñalara's summit, the highest peak of the mountain system, three small circuses, two morrenas and severals lakes, all this of glacier origin. The place was declared as Nature reserve in June, 1990 by the government of the Community of Madrid.
The vegetation of this nature reserve is composed of bushes on the high mountain. Grass and forests of white pine that only grow in the lowest zones. In the highest parts they predominate over the Alpine meadows and the stones. Some animals that habits this place are the black vulture, the imperial eagle, small mammals and amphibians in the lagoons. There is a large Car park at Puerto de Cotos, tourist center of the region, from where you can access the park. In the natural space, much visited during holidays, it is possible to practise the trekking, the climbing and the skiing during the winter.
