Paxton Media Group

Paxton Media Group of Paducah, Kentucky, is a privately held media company with holdings that include newspapers and a TV station, WPSD-TV in Paducah. David M. Paxton is president and CEO.

The company owns 29 daily newspapers and numerous weekly newspapers, mostly in the southern United States. Holdings include The Paducah Sun, The Herald-Sun in Durham, North Carolina, and the Jonesboro Sun in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Paxton Media Group traces it roots to 1896, when a group of investors headed by W.P. Paxton launched The Paducah Sun-Democrat. The company operated only The Paducah Sun and WPSD-TV until 1989, when it began acquiring other newspapers.

The Herald-Sun in Durham, North Carolina is currently owned by Paxton Media Group. The (Durham) Herald-Sun was formerly The Durham Morning Herald and The Durham Sun merging in the early 1990's. The Durham Sun dates back to 1889.

The Durham Herald Company sold the newspaper and its sister paper The Chapel Hill Herald in January 2005 ending its independent, family-owned status under the Rollins Family.

The Herald-Sun's circulation numbers were 41,000 (Sunday), 39,000 (Monday-Friday) and 34,000 (Saturday) as audited in 2006.
