[edit] Templates
Heya, in case you missed it: You don't need to use the msg: prefix for templates anymore, just {{delete}} will do. Actually, these days {{del}} and {{d}} work too, thanks to the magic of redirects. --W(t) 17:49, 2005 May 26 (UTC)
[edit] Candy Bar Table
I admire your energy. Now, I just have to make myself learn how to use it (anything new always seems more complicated than it really is). Some peanut M&M's might help me along. Thanks. --Mothperson 16:43, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
As I expected, that table is very easy to use. So I've put some companies and descriptions in, but I'm thinking if I were more frugal with words, the table wouldn't be ballooning up. I started putting the original companies in only to show how Hershey and the other giants have devoured all these small companies, but where more interesting notes are available, they can be tossed.
I also started working on the article. Feel free to rewrite anything. I wanted to get some explanation of the origins in there. The discussion of sugar chemistry did not seem appropriate here (although it should be somewhere in the general confectionery category), so I removed it.
When I went to that site you mentioned, I nearly fell off my chair seeing Hazelnut Snickers in Australia. It isn't fair! If you haven't read Candy Freak by Steve Almond, you should.
I don't have the Oxford book, but I have Larousse and a fairly good general collection of food books. For this particular project, I'm lucky enough to have bought, about 20 years ago, one of Ray Broekel's candy bar books. Many many extinct candy bars in it. I warned you.
My turn to go to bed. You'll probably have doubled the size of the page, and filled in all the blanks by the time I get up. Mothperson 01:49, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Weirdness
For your entertainment, google "tortina mini candy" or whatever that Italian thing is with "mini" in it, but be sure to put in candy or candy bar for the search. When you get the first page of results, go a few lines down until you see the Italian candy name, and a site with, I think, an "mx" in its address. I was doing this trying to find out what the Italian candy bar was, when I came across this site, and no, I have not a clue why they are doing this. It is a mystery. --Mothperson 03:25, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I didn't describe that very well, did I? Here you go. the mystery
- It's always a shock to go looking, in good faith, for information about something and then find yourself suddenly faced with this kind of result. I have some naming issues I'd like your opinion on, re the big mfrs., but I will put the questions on the candy bar talk page. Later. After some caffeine. --Mothperson 12:48, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
having problems remembering how to link. Mothperson 12:52, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
argh. where's that caffeine?
What I meant was - why on earth does a site devoted to motorcycle parts have a candy bar page? Are the Hell's Angels closet candy bar freaks? I'm very curious. My only annoyance came from the fact I thought I'd finally found a site that would explain the Torino Mini and the Violet Crumble center to me. Like, so not, damn it! Apple wine - that reminds me - the apple Abba Zaba sounds really good. I need to find one. It would probably go well with apple wine. --Mothperson 15:36, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism?!
You refined my entry to freemasonery as vandalism when in fact it was NOT. I have in front of me a copy of the said book and the information I added is clearly true. I'm insulted that you would allow your own bias and desire to hide the truth to edit wikipedia and you should know I have brought this up to the required people. Wikipedia is about being unbiased and your clearly biased on this subject and seek to hide the truth, based on your history.
Belgarath TS 10:34, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
Congratulations on your editing and removal of vandalism and opinion based posts in a timely fashion Paul. I enjoy a lot of your contributions and appreciate the fact that when I'm sleeping, you're on guard keeping your eyes pealed for cowans who seem to think the world is out to get them. - Just got your message. I'll be keeping my eyes pealed, MSJapan seems to be doing a good job also, don't know much about them or their involvement in the brotherhood. A holiday that involves being away from the internet sounds scary to me. The internet is my primary source of at-home entertainment though. ;)

- As for Arabic, it's one of the hardest languages I've dealt with, although I'm slowly getting a better grasp of it. It's come in handy with a fair bit of my (masonic oriented) research, as has Ancient Egyptian for that matter, which is a whoooole new ball game. Unfortunately the template for Aramaic isn't functioning as it should be, it's another language I'm struggling to master, although I'm failing at most of late due to not enough time on my hands. But alas, such is life. :) Jachin 17:43, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Hello, this is User:FDR. In the discussion article on the Freemasonry page I made a comment about Freemasonry being very right-wing in its politics and started the discussion thread "Politics", which was number 40. You responded to my comments saying that you did not agree with them. This caused me to think about what I had written. And I changed my mind and decided that I did not have enough evidence to support what I had written that I might be wrong. So I deleted my contributions. Since your contributions to that thread were merely responses to what I had written I think we should deleting the whole thread. It is of course entirely up to you whether or not to do so, just a suggestion. FDR | Talk 8:51 PM August 31, 2005
[edit] SAS Operations in Italy During WWII
Hi Paulin, I'm Italian and I live in Fano, I saw that you wrote about two SAS Operation (Candytuft and Baobab) in my town during WWII, I've read some local books about this period but unfotunately, no one reported something about them, so I'm asking you, if can you help me to found some more references like books name, to this facts. Thank you very much --Nickel Chromo 09:22, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Operation Phantom Fury
I have reread the paragraph you have objected to in Operation Phantom Fury writen by anon user, and checked it against sources. It is consistant. The paragraph does not say that WP is illegal, and it is not illegal "White phosphorus is not banned by any treaty". It says that the US government denied it's use. However they must have got their wires crossed because the US Army doens't deny it. The effects are treatable, and I suppose the soldiers who survived accidental exposure was lucky. This claim is anyway in the context of quotes by US soldiers in the RAI documentary. WP reacts with water, wet things like skin burn but not dry things like clothing. WP is a chemical weapon, it's function is not to explode but to burn and poison. There is no reason to remove the paragraph. Seabhcán 10:55, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- Great, would love to collaborate on the article. I'm not sure about tomorrow though (Real life is a drag) But I'll drop in over the weekend or early next week. (I read up a little more and discovered I'm wrong about WP reacting with water. I was thinking of Potassium) Seabhcán 17:26, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- The article is much better on first sight. It's a little image poor though. I remember seeing some "before and after" satalite photos which might be good if we can add them. I'll read through it again later. Seabhcán 09:19, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- Anon user who wrote the original article...
I believe the article as well as the article on WP has been edited and deleted to a point where it sais absolutely NOTHING!!! The point of the RAI documentary, if you saw it, was that WP was used against CIVILIANS! and if so it IS illegal. Read the treaty and you see what it says. So please put back the original form of the article as otherwise it is just plain cencorship. The current article, in its form, is a discrace as it has been tampered with beyond recognition, and yes even to the point of propaganda. (Anon User 82.192.227.165)
-
- Well that is the thing about the Wiki. Nobody owns articles. We are pursuing the truth. The truth seems to be coming out on this one. Sure the Americans used WP in this instance. It is simply not new or newsworthy. All armies use WP. This RAI story was oversold. Paul, in Saudi 02:44, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Stone Age or Stoneage?
Sorry to be a pedant but, hey, what the hell!?
You inserted a space into Stoneage in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operations_and_projects_(military_and_non-military)#Western_Front
Are you sure? I checked on the several sites and the op name "stoneage" checks out, eg,
- http://www.naval-history.net/WW2CampaignsNorthAfrica.htm
- http://www.regiamarina.net/timeline/1942/1942_us.htm
- http://www.hms-arethusa.co.uk/service/1935/1933-1950.html
and others. British WW2 ops names are usually 1 word - ok, now gimme a long list of exceptions (apart from Market Garden, which is often presented as 2 ops)! - and they don't need to be literally correct.
We seem to be moving over the same grounds, hope I'm not causing you any grief. Folks at 137 18:14, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- "When I wrote my book ...." oh heck - an expert! I think I'll find a stone to hide under! Yeah I'll annotate the alternatives, it'd be more complete. Sorry to wade in with size 9 hobnails, but as it was a Brit operation, I think I would favour the reports from participating sources such as the HMS Arethusa site. On the other hand if US merchant ships were involved, then both are valid. What d'you think?
- Why op names? Well, it has a nice element of serendipity, never know what I'll find or what I can contribute or what threads to follow. Alternatively, I'm a compulsive geek who should get out more often. I'll have a beer instead. :¬)

[edit] I Am Blocked
D- I recently moved to another 'gated community' here is Jeddah. I am now using a low-speed dial-up connection that is widely used for free here in Saudi. I see I am blocked and can understand why, a million folks use this portal. Nonetheless, I am a know quaintly. Is there anything we can do preserve security and still allow me to start a new page? - As far as I can tell, you aren't blocked. You don't appear in the block log, or in the block list. And it appears that you can edit pages fine. Is it just that you can't start new pages? I've never heard of that kind of block before. dbenbenn | talk 19:24, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Operation Gold
Paul, thanks for your comment on my rewrite of Operation Gold. I was going to write an article on the Berlin Tunnel, but it was a good thing I searched Wikipedia before doing so and found the Operation Gold article. So I decided to rewrite and expand the article considerably since it is such a good story to tell. I have not been making new articles lately since I have became busy in my work (my last being an article on the spy John Honeyman). Hopefully that'll change soon. [edit] I am Blocked, Again
I am blocked again and seem to be unable to do anything about it. Admin FreakofNurture blocked me for some reason. I cannot contact him as when I click on 'e-mail this person' I get 'you are blocked.' When I go to Admin Noticeboard I cannot post my problem as (you guessed it) I am blocked. Further oddness is that in the past the Saudi masse ISP I use was blocked. But now I am in the US and am still blocked for some reason. Can anyone help? User:PaulinSaudi

- Hello! You can see that you were never blocked; most likely the IP address you were using, which can be shared by multiple users, was blocked and you were inadvertantly caught in that block. If the block hasn't expired yet, would you let me know your IP address and the reason for blocking so that I can unblock you? (It should tell you the number in the screen when you try to edit.) Many thanks, and apologies for the inconvenience. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 20:06, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

- In any case, I seem to be unblocked now. (If only I could remember what I wanted to edit!) Thanks all. User:PaulinSaudi

- As Flcelloguy said in order to unblock you we need to know the details, we can't tell which IP address you use so which one is blocking you, or what other block is impacting you, when you try to edit and get the block message it gives you these details to unblock you we need to know them, just saying "I need to be unblocked" is next to useless to us in resolving this. --81.104.39.63 21:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Operation Artur
Hi, I noticed your comment on the talk page for "Operation Artur". Just so you know, it didnt exist. It is posible the original editor meant to write "Operation Artus"- the name the German Foreign Ministry gave the plan but there is no way to know. A lot of the facts in the article were also misplaced or in error.
I am writing a new article and a series on German Intelligence activities in Ireland in ww2. Article Operation Lobster contains references to some (some are still not live). Sorry it was not caught before now but it seems no Irish Wikipedians editing knew the history Be well. Fluffy999 02:28, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kimonos!
The quote you deleted: with their kimonos up, is, I believe, attributed to James Somerville [1], the fleet commander. With this attribution, would you agree to its presence? I think it adds to the article's colour and the picture of Allied morale. Folks at 137 14:21, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Operation Desert Sabre
As it stands, it says nowt that couldn't be given in a simple list. "A training exercise that didn't happen, but added to the enemy's confusion." Hmmm! perhaps it's better as a part of a larger article (with a redirect) - there's no link to the Kuwait war or similar, so there's no perspective at present. On the other hand, maybe with more detail it would deserve its own existence: what techniques were to be rehearsed? why was it notable? how did it affect Iraqi disposition? why was it pulled? etc. All IMO of course. And maybe I need to be more critical when creating new articles, although I do take the line of put up and gauge the reaction. Oh yes, is "sabre" the American spelling? Sorry to ramble on, I must get a beer.Folks at 137 17:50, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Paul, you have my deepest sympathy. Get out while you can still reason. I took a quick look at the article and (without wishing to offend), it's not one that I would wish to plough through. Some articles draw you in, some are just so interesting that poor drafting is bearable: this one is neither - it tells a story badly. You could restart from scratch, but leave the original - it keeps a lotta people occupied outta harm's way. Folks at 137 16:31, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] PAUL PAUL PAUL
Well, PaulinSaudi - this is really really weird. This is the first time in almost a year I've entered Wikipedia (I clicked on lamest Wikipedia edit wars ever, and started howling so much I had to log in and here was a message from one of my very favorite Wikipedians from just a few days ago - it's a miracle). What do you mean you cannot edit? Have you engaged in some terrible edit war over nougat? It's taking me a while to remember the system here. But I still have some of your best candybars, and all of the wrappers. I laughed so much over the lame edit war descriptions, I think I may very well come back to Wikipedia and indulge in the insanity again. I had forgotten how much I missed it. Thank you for remembering me. I'm going to Italy for Christmas! More Italian candy bars!!! Although I still have to go check the Happy Hippo entry because there is more than one kind of Happy Hippo! Lordy, maybe this isn't such a good idea - .... ah, well, too late. I'm hooked again. Mothperson cocoon 23:40, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
My dear PaulinSaudi: I'll have to tell you about the synchonicity later, because I'm still not believing it. But I won't manage Rome this trip. I'm going to Vicenza and Venice and Bologna. Rome, definitely, next trip, when we go south. I'm going to break into French when stressed, I know, and my friends are going to break into German, and my sister is going to break into Spanish, so I guess we'll get by somehow, despite the fact that none of us can speak Italian! We all, interestingly, can order in an Italian restaurant, however. I am no way going to try wild boar, but eels, maybe. Mothperson cocoon 21:58, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chastity
Just seen your stub on Operation Chastity. Are you sure about the Mulberry harbour? My understanding was that this was a specific codename for the type of installation off Normandy and there were no spare parts once towed to Normandy. If there had been, they would probably hace been used to replace the one lost in the storm. Pre-fabrication was a long task and towing around Brittany probably out of the question. I thought that Chastity was just capture the area and use local facilities or across the beach. Have a look at The Inception of OVERLORD and Its Logistic Aspects: no mention of Mulberry, but an appreciation of the existing facilities. Folks at 137 20:41, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] White Phosphorous
In Talk:Second Battle of Fallujah you questioned several aspects about the use of WP based on your own military experience. I study chemistry and analyzed how this stuff works. The dangerous moment is when it ignits, not the fog. The aspect of dehydration and acid burns leaving waterless clothes intact is also clear. The skin intact story is doubious and possibly a misinterpretation based on the fact how corpses look that were next to an ignition. Possibly by accident an editor who claimes to be a participant of the combat has revealed that WP and high explosives are used in combination to take fortified positions. Technically this is possible (see also NATO guidelines on treating WP wounds). It is a combined explosive/acid attack and there is little possibility to take cover. Lots of newscrews have been hunting for a confirmation of such a use of WP while it is always claimed to be used for defence. Wandalstouring 22:21, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:List of World War II military operations#Errors
I may be getting into a dispute and I would value your opinions and/or contributions. Have a look and and counsel me, if you would. Folks at 137 18:53, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi PaulinSaudi, I made some more changes following Folks137 last edit to the article. This makes it more manageable. Folks137 maybe thought a conflict was brewing because it probably looked like I was griping that the list was big, overwhelming, and looked like a collection of operations that had articles rather than a listing of operations. This wasnt my intention, I just wondered how a reader is supposed to know that Abwehr operations in Ireland, which appear repeatedly, didnt really mean a lot beside major military operations which appear once. Thats why I was trying to express an idea on distinguishing between apparatus of Axis forces and their operations. In their own list by country of operation Abwehr operations wouldnt look so pervasive and it would aid comprehension. A complete listing would be 100's of operations deep in some theaters but to look at a list of the Eastern Front Europe a reader might get the impression that anti-partisan operations, to use another example, where just as crucial in Yugoslavia to deciding the final outcome as major offensives like Bagration, Barbarossa etc.
- Sadly I also gathered that the original source document has some major errors (at least with Axis). Even more sad is that some of the errors even ended up on their own pages eg. Adler for Adlertag, Herbstnebel described as Wacht am Rhein when it was a component. When I contacted the creator of the original source document he said that he hadnt looked at it in 5 years and didnt advance any detail on his sources. I will work through what I can when I can.
