To be honest, I found the whole etymology debate a storm in a teacup.
As far as the electric bass is concerned, there is no doubt that Leo Fender designed the original Precision Bass to allow guitarists to fulfil the double bass role in a group. Thus it can rightly be said to be derived from both guitar (playing position, frets [hence "precision" for guitarists unused to fretless instruments], body shape) AND double bass (tuning, longer scale, intended musical role). --Dburgess 03:25, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
" No doubt" and "rightly"? Please do your research. Leo fender did not design the first solid body, horizontal, fretted electric bass. I suspect he was very aware of the widely publicised Audiovox "electric bass fiddle" of the late thirties. The the original Precision Bass was a replacement for the double bass. The "Precision" label was a reference to the fact that imprecise intonation sounded awful when amplified and particularly bad in studio recordings. The etymology debate may be a storm in a teacup to people who don't care, but it is ignorant to label a bassist a guitarist. The fact that the design made it easier for a guitarist to play a bass instrument did not make a guitarist a bassist. Believe me, I have seen plenty of guitarists playing a bass and it is just bad bass playing. A very different approach and thinking is required to properly fulfill the role of a bass player.Ozbass 13:45, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

I think it serves no useful purpose, but there are some users who feel it necessary to have a disambiguation page, and when they spot one doesn't exist with the word 'disambiguation' in parentheses included in the title, will go and make one. I think it is therefore best to keep it as is, so that everyone can see it is not really doing anything because the 'bass' article is doing it. The point is that people continually and unthinkingly create links pointing to 'bass' without realising it's ambiguous, but they don't create links pointing to 'bass (disambiguation)' unthinkingly. Therefore it is 'bass' that needs to be a disambiguation article for all those following such links. We could then point 'bass' to 'bass (disambiguation)', but it hardly seems worth it. You asked about those 2nds in my transcription of the Young Tradition version of the Dirge. I did that many years ago for a folk band that I played in at the time, then more recently found it and adapted it for two tenors and a bass viol. However, I don't think I have changed any of the lines (intentionally). Certainly, I wrote down the first two bars of verse two with different harmonisation (and different tune) from verse 1. My recollection is that verse 1 starts with the middle voice in unison with the top voice and then repeats the same phrase in bar 2, as I have notated. Verse 2, bar 2, looks like F-D-E in the top part, D-D-C# in the middle, and Bb-G-A in the bass. I agree that my verse 1 does look a bit odd. I still have the vinyl album and will try to play it at the weekend and check whether I still agree with my transcription! Also, I will check the original key (which I have almost certainly changed at some time) and make sure that I have the parts in the right order (I sometimes have difficulty telling which is the top part and which the middle). - I had another listen to the Dirge and the original seems to be a tone higher than I wrote it (I probably transposed it at the time I did the version for viols to make it nicer for the bass viol). I have updated the copy on Wikimedia. However, I still think I have got that second bar pretty much right.
