McLynn studied Drama at Trinity College, Dublin. She was heavily involved in Trinity's Dublin University Players (college drama society).

McLynn is also a successful comedian and novelist, producing books such as The Woman on the Bus (2004), and appearing on numerous panel shows, including Just a Minute, Have I Got News For You, and If I Ruled the World. In 1999, she appeared in the film adaptation of Angela's Ashes. She has appeared on the UK TV show Bremner, Bird and Fortune for several series, and in Jennifer Saunders' Jam and Jerusalem.
