[edit] About Paulie

Paulie is one of the five foreman of Dock 1 of the Galley-La Company of Water 7, specializing in the mast and rigging. He is a skilled shipwright, and his unique fighting style reflects this, as he attacks with a variety rope and rigging techniques to strike and ensnare his opponents. A student of Iceburg, Paulie was made a full-fledged shipwright under Iceburg's tutelage. Of the five foremen of Dock 1, Paulie is shown to be the closest and most trusted of Iceburg, and while the foremen of Dock 1 hold equal positions, Paulie has been known to take charge over the others and give orders. Paulie is often in debt, due to his gambling habits, and will jump upon any opportunity to clear himself of it. He also has a prudish revulsion against women who wear revealing outfits. Whenever he sees a woman wearing anything skimpy, such as Kalifa's short skirt, he gets upset and calls her "lewd." He's also made comments about the outfit Nami wore during the Enies Lobby arc on the Sea Train. Additionally, he yelled at the Square Sisters, who were also on the Sea Train, telling them that they are the ones that make society go down hill. They respond by calling him "shy boy," which angers him further.

In Japanese fan polls, Paulie is currently voted the 18th most popular character.

[edit] History

When Paulie first met the Straw Hats, he did not seem to like them very much (taking special offense to Nami, whom he deemed "lewd"). After it appeared that they were responsible for Iceburg's attempted murder, he became incensed, and along with the other Galley-La shipwrights, attacked Luffy. He remained convinced that Luffy and his fellow Straw Hat Pirates had it out for Galley-La until he, too, was attacked by CP9 and was shown their true forms: his trusted friends Rob Lucci, Kalifa, Kaku, and Blueno. Faced with this reality, he teamed up with Luffy to attack CP9 head-on, but was defeated unceremoniously and immediately.

Paulie was rescued from the wreckage of Galley-La headquarters by Chopper, and later helped coordinate efforts to find and rescue Zoro and Luffy (who had been thrown far into the outlying city by Lucci). Soon afterwards, he volunteered to accompany the Straw-Hats (along with the Franky Family, Kokoro, Peepley Lulu and Tilestone) to rescue Robin, Franky, and Usopp before they reached the dreaded Enies Lobby, headquarters of the Marines. The group set out on the Sea Train prototype "Rocket Man," hoping to catch up to Puffing Tom before it was too late.

[edit] The Enies Lobby Incident

When they make it to Enies Lobby, Paulie leads the fight against the government and Marine lackeys while the Straw Hats go in to fight CP9. Before the crew enters the building, he gives them a message to deliver to his former co-workers: "You're fired!" He has recently sustained a deep wound from the battle on Enies Lobby. He has been reported as dead by the Buster Call soldiers, but a recent chapter confirmed him to be alive having saved himself, Galley-La, the Franky Family, and the giants from falling into the bottomless waterfall beneath the island with his rope skills.

Paulie and the rest then escaped Enies Lobby on the Puffing Tom. Two days later, he is seen leading the restoration of Water 7 from all the damage caused by the Aqua Laguna. Later he, along with Peepley Lulu, Ice-burg and Tilestone, help Franky with the construction of the new ship of the Straw Hats. After the Straw Hats leave Water 7, he continues with the restoration of the city.

[edit] Trivia

  • His birthday, as revealed in vol.43 SBS, is July 8th. The meaning is behind his main attacks, which is based on rope(縄). It can be interpreted as なわ, or July 8th.
  • Also on the flashback showing Tom's Workers finishing the Sea Train, a small child resembling Paulie is seen running along side it during the train's first run. Later, Oda confirmed this was indeed Paulie. According to Oda, the Sea Train was what inspired Paulie to become a shipwright.
