[edit] Early Career
Paul Wall began his musical career as working his way up from rapping as a kid in Houston performing at many youth festivals and gatherings before venturing into southern hip-hop. Paul Wall and Chamillionaire soon went to Swishahouse, but left for Paid in Full Records a short time later. After several mixtape and independent releases, including the critically acclaimed Get Ya Mind Correct, the two parted ways. Chamillionaire continued to release independent records, while Paul Wall returned to the Swishahouse fold. This move allowed him to appear on Mike Jones' first commercially distributed single, "Still Tippin'", from his first major label album Who Is Mike Jones?. Who Is Mike Jones? was the first screwed & chopped music to receive major play outside of the Houston area, both on mainstream radio and video outlets such as MTV and Clear Channel affiliates.
Wall credits a lot of his success to the mixtape game, having hosted tapes by DJ Ideal, Joey Fingaz, DJ Rondevu and many others. Paul Wall dominated the mixtape scene and was the first Texas rapper to host a DJ SWB video mix dvd.[citation needed]
He also screwed & chopped albums for T.I. Urban Legend, as well as Z-RO's Let The Truth Be Told, I'm Still Livin albums.
He is also in a group called Expensive Taste with Rob Aston an ex-Transplants member, and +44's Travis Barker (ex-Aquabats, Blink-182, Box Car Racer, and Transplants). Their debut album is set to be released sometime in 2007, but it is unknown when the band will have time to release the record and tour, as Barker's priority is with +44 and Wall is deep in the throws of Get Money, Stay True.
In February 2007, Paul Wall appeared in the VH1 documentary Bling'd: Blood, Diamonds, and Hip-Hop, which chronicles his visit to Sierra Leone, where he investigated the blood diamond phenomenon and witnessed the aftermath of that country's civil war alongside Raekwon and Tego Calderon.
[edit] Trivia
- He made custom made grills for fellow Houston rapper Chingo Bling.
- Since his separation from The Color Changin' Click, Paul Wall has made peace with Chamillionaire and the two have agreed to one day make music and tour together again.
- Paul Wall was given a verse for Mike Jones' "Still Tippin'" to replace Chamillionaire, since Cham and Jones had developed a beef.
- Expensive Taste is a rap "super-group" consisting of Paul Wall, Travis Barker (former drummer of blink-182, The Transplants, and (+44)), and Rob Aston (rapper of The Transplants).
- He hosted BET's Rap City on the week that his album "Get Money, Stay True" is released so he can promote the album.
[edit] Personal Life
Paul has a wife, Crystal (to whom he has been married since October 2005). Crystal is an R&B singer also signed to Swishahouse (under the name Crys Wall), who made her debut on two tracks for The Day Hell Broke Loose 3 and appears on two tracks from Get Money, Stay True. The two have a son, William "Fat" Patrick Slayton, born April 18, 2006 (named partially in honor of deceased Houston rapper Fat Pat).
