Paul Mackney

Paul Mackney is the Joint General Secretary, University and College Union, representing around 120,000 academic and academic related staff in further and higher education throughout the United Kingdom.
From 1975 to 1992, he taught in Further Education Colleges - from 1986 to 1992 as Head of Birmingham Trade Union Studies Centre at South Birmingham College.
Paul has an MA in Industrial Relations from Warwick University 1986.
Paul served on the TUC’s Stephen Lawrence Task Group (1999-2001) and is a member of the Commission for Black Staff in Further Education.
In September 2002, Paul became the first NATFHE General Secretary to be elected to the TUC General Council. He is a member of the following General Council bodies: Learning and Skills Task Group, Organising and Representation Task Group, Public Service Unions Liaison Group and Race Relations Committee.
He is also a member of the Public Services Forum Learning and Skills Task Force.
He is one of a new generation of left-wing trade union general secretaries who opposed the war on Iraq and were organised in the FUWL (Fed up with losing) Group known by the media the Awkward Squad (cf Billy Hayes, Jeremy Dear, Mick Rix, Mark Serwotka, Bob Crow.
