Paul J. Swain

Paul Joseph Swain (born 1943) is the current bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls.

[edit] Early Life

Swain was a convert from Methodism attended law school at the University of Wisconsin. He served in Vietnam and, after his return home, was legal counsel to Wisconsin Governor Lee S. Dreyfus. Received into the church in 1982, he attended Pope John XXIII National Seminary at Weston and was ordained in 1988.

In 2002, he was named Madison's vicar-general and rector of its Cathedral of St Raphael. He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on 31 August 2006 and was ordained on 26 October 2006 to replace Robert James Carlson who was reassigned to Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan on 24 February 2005. Archbishop Harry Flynn of St Paul-Minneapolis, served as principal consecrator, assisted by Swain's predecessor, Robert Carlson of Saginaw and Bishop-emeritus William H. Bullock, of his home diocese of Madison. Bishop Swain wears the ring of the Second Bishop of Madison Cletus F. O'Donnell.
