Paul Broadbent (born 1959 in Blind River, Ontario) is the son of Ed Broadbent, who adopted him after marrying the young widow Lucille Munroe, Paul's mother. Educated at Georges Vanier Catholic School in Kanata, Ontario, and École secondaire publique De La Salle in Ottawa, Ontario, he joined 3 Field Engineer Squadron (a Militia unit of the Primary Reserve) in 1978, subsequently transferring to the regular component of the Canadian Forces in 1980. He was assigned to the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio System as a communications specialist/analyst.

Following his marriage in England in 1986, he left the military and moved to the public service in the United Kingdom, working in the National Health Service and the Department of Social Security (DSS) as a software developer, developing mainframe applications within the IT Support and Child Support Agencies. Paul was involved in supporting the merger, in 2002, of the DSS Benefits Agency and the Department for Education and Employment's Employment Services, providing support and advice for the first trance of new, combined offices.

After the closure of the merger project, Paul moved to the Ministry of Defence in 2003, working on the interpretation of departmental security policy for the air sector. Three years later, he moved to the MoD main building in London, where he develops and writes departmental security policy, particularly regard to the management of risk in organisations. He is divorced with two children - Nicole and Gareth. Paul continues to be involved in the military services, and serves as a member of the Territorial Army in the Royal Corps of Signals.
