Paul (exarch)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paul was the exarch of Ravenna from 726 to 727.
In 727, the exarchate was in revolt against the imperial imposition of iconoclasm. The cities of the exarchate even entered into alliance with the pope, the Lombards, and the other Italian cities against the Greeks. The Emperor Leo III sent first Eutichius then Paul to put down the revolt.
The legendary first doge of Venice, Paolo Lucio Anafesto, was not probably entirely legendary, but, according to Lord Norwich, is probably a mistake for the exarch Paul, whose magister militum was coincidentally named Marcellus, the same name as Paoluccio's reputed successor as doge, Marcellus Tegallianus.
