[edit] Derivation

Paudel was derived from the word Paude (पौडी), a name of the place in various locations in India and Nepal; and a Sanskrit word Aalya (आलय) which means home. Those with the last name Paudel are generally from the Brahmin caste. Another research found that before Paudel was used for surname, Bhatt was used. When some Bhatt emigrated to Nepal from Rajasthan(at the time, Himalyan Range included Afganistan, Nepal, and India), they originated Paude, which later become Paudel circa 1100. In fact, Bhatt, both in Nepal and India also posses the same Gotras, Atreya as Paudel. Similarly, historic artifacts traced back to Rajendra Bikram Shah, King of Nepal (1813-1881) A.D. also proved a surprising facts that Paudel, Sigdel, and Bagale Thapa all posses Atreya gotra and all are inter related.
