Pattani (town)

Mueang Pattani is a city in the far south of Thailand, near the boundary to Malaysia. It is the capital of the Pattani Province. The city has a population of 43,690 (2000 census), and is located at 6°50′N 101°20′E.

The word Pattani is derived from "Petani" in Malay which means farmer.

The local dialect of Malay is called Patani Malay or Yawi in Thai (derived from Jawi).
