Pattambi (10°48'13.24"North/76°10'50.32"E East) is a small town in Palakkad district of Kerala state, south India. The Padinhare Madham Guruvayoorappan Temple is one of the very famous temples in Kerala. It almost attracts pilgrims as much as of Guruvayoor Temple situated 33 km from here.

Another annual feast (the Nercha) of the Pattambi Mosque situated 61 km from Palakkad, falls in the first week of February. About 70- 80 tuskers are lined up for the festival. Throngs of believers from all corners of the state attend this festival, which is held in memory of Aloor Valiya Pookunjkoya Thangal - a Muslim saint of South Malabar. The town is illuminated brilliantly and a pageant replete with traditional musical ensembles like 'Panchavadyam' and 'Thayambaka' is taken out in the night. Various art forms get under way on the banks of the river Bharathappuzha.

The great Comrade E.M.S. Namboodiripad was elected from Pattambi constituncy and became chief mininster

Tippu, the Emperor of Mysore, relates it to the invasion of this area. His soldiers, who had settled at Pattambi, had started this celebration in 1913 in memory of Aloor Valia Pookunhikoya Thangal, who had helped them in their distress. The nercha is an example of communal harmony. Pattambi is the birth place of famous personalities like Punnasseri Nambi (1858-1935) (Sanskrit Scholar), KP Assainar Vaidyar (1907-1984) (Ayurvedic Physician & Social leader) EP Gopalan (Socialist Leader) etc.

[edit] Bharatapuzha River

River Bharatapuzha (also known as Nila) flows through Pattambi and near by panchayats. World renowned writers and poets like M.T. Vasudevan Nair (known as MT), Akkitham Narayanan Namboothiri were influenced by the beauty of this river. But the river has lost its charm and aesthetic beauty because of the continuous and exhaustive sand mining from the river bed. This has led to the growth of small patches of thick long grasses in the river which obstruct the flow of water. Because of the sand mining the ground water depletion of water resources is a major factor leading to frequent droughts. The sand lobby is very strong and influential among the police force and the authorities. Police officers and other officials who voiced and acted against this were removed from their post because of their pressure.

Organizations like Bharathapuzha Samrakhshana Samithi led by Dr. KP Mohammed Kutty and Adv. Udhayavarman aim to make the public aware of the need for saving the river but have given little result due to the lack of public involvement. It is sad to see that the river is slowly dying due to contamination and sand mining. Waste from hotels, hospitals and houses are directly discharged to the river which makes it even more complicated. Once a habitat of a variety of fish species, now the river is on the brink of becoming biologically dead due to contamination and rampant sand mining.

[edit] Govt. Sanskrit College

The Govt. Sanskrit College, named after the great Sanskrit scholar, Shri. Punnesseri Nambi is situated in Pattambi which offers degree and post-graduate courses on various disciplines. The college had a very humble beginning when it was initially started as a School by the legendry Punnesseri Nambi in his Perumudiyoor Village. SNGS College is a first grade Sanskrit College and it stands as a brilliant monument of its celebrated founder, the late Punnasseri Nampi Neelakanta Sharma - revolutionary educational reformer of Kerala, popularly known as "Gurunathan”. The college is recognized as a Center Of Excellence in the field of Higher Education in the state of Kerala. Recently the College was awarded with 5 Star Accreditation by NAAC. The College Campus sprawl across 13 acres of lush greenery land is situated 2 k.m. from Pattambi Town.

Pattambi is also going to have a full fledge Mini Civil Station, Govt. Hospital, 3 private hospitals and nursing homes.

[edit] Business & Commerce

The business sector has not shown any remarkable progress when compared to the growth of other nearby towns like Perinthalmanna, Manjeri, Valanchery and Kunnamkulam due to Pattambi’s unique geographical location. Pattambi also lacks Gulf Money which plays an important part in the economic and business developments of the other towns. While the river Bharathapuzha flows through the southern side of the town, the railway line passes through the northern side which squeezes the town with no further developments. More over, the Government Upper Primary School is located in the heart of the town which occupies a great area. Public has raised concerns about the safety of school children who have to pass through heavy traffic. There is a cause-way linking the north and south costs of Bharathapuzha at Pattambi, which is one of the important bridge-links across the river. The earthmark here is wrongly placed at lat=10.49, lon=76.12 but the correct location is <lat.10°48'13.24"N/long.76°10'50.32"E>.

The town is famous for the harmony between Hindus and Muslims. However there are small pockets where the communal forces are strong.
