[edit] Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick are jellyfishing at Jellyfish Fields. Patrick accidentally falls down a cliff, and loses his head. SpongeBob accidentally picks up a piece of Brain Coral and puts it on what is left of Patrick's head, from which Patrick suddenly gains intelligence. Patrick seems to be interested in nature, work and almost any music when he is intelligent. He loses interest in all the things he and SpongeBob enjoyed, and actually hangs out with Squidward and Sandy, until driving them both away with his patronizing attitude (he tells Squidward to find himself a new musical mentor and tells Sandy that she does not have the ability to solve remedial equations). Then, since he is too smart even for them, Patrick wants to be friends with SpongeBob again. He tries many solutions to solve his problem, such as comparing himself with SpongeBob, meditating, doing research on Squidward, reading books about fun, and even growing hair, but none of these things work. Eventually he kidnaps SpongeBob and tries doing all the activities he used to do. When this doesn't work, he tries to redo his actions by falling off the cliff again. Patrick survives the fall without losing his head this time, but he is still intelligent. However, with careful measurements by the smart Patrick, SpongeBob then realizes it was the piece of brain coral that he grabbed, so he restores Patrick's old head.

[edit] Cultural References

  • The episode is similar in plot to the novel Flowers for Algernon in which the protagonist gains intelligence quickly but then wishes it gone because of the way others see him.
  • Squidward plays a song that Patrick identifies to be titled Cornelius Pufferfish's Opus 67 "Symphony In Blue" - a possible reference to a song of the same name on Kate Bush's album Lionheart. It could also be a reference to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
  • The first thing Patrick says after having his brain connected is, "I find all this laughter highly illogical," a tribute to Spock's famous phrase on the original Star Trek series (which Paramount also did).

[edit] Trivia/Goofs

  • Real brain coral is actually shaped like brains and not cones.
  • It is possible that Patrick doesn't have a brain before he placed brain coral on himself. When brain coral was placed onto him, gears in his head start running. This could mean his former head had no brain. Real star fish don't have brains.
  • The first few times this episode was shown, it had scrolling captions. This was later changed.
  • Smart Patrick is so upset by not understanding SpongeBob's concept of fun that he makes a solution that makes his hair grow, just so that he can pull it out in his anger. This is ironically the answer to Squidward's dream to have hair.
  • Patrick calls SpongeBob "Robert", which indicates that SpongeBob's real name may be SpongeRobert SquarePants (longer version of Bob). However, Robert as his full name is not confirmed by Hillenburg. Also, in the scene where Patrick is in Sandy's treedome, Patrick calls her "Sandra", which indicates that Sandy's real name may be Sandra Cheeks (longer version of Sandy). However, Sandra as her full name is not confirmed by Hillenburg. Patrick may be calling them by their "full" names just to sound smart, though. If this is true, than SpongeRobert and Sandra have no middle names.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick both have a talent for belch-talking.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick both have a scrapbook full of photos of them having fun together.
  • During the scene where Patrick is explaining clarinet techniques to Squidward, the dots on his head constantly change from pink to black.
  • This episode's working title is "Abracamoron."
  • When Patrick puts his head (the brain coral) back on you can hear the orchestra tune-up from the Beatles record A Day in the Life. When the plug slots into the socket, it stops abruptly, just like in the track.
  • In the "guitar and jellyfish joke", smart Patrick said that "you can't strum a jellyfish." However, in the episode Jellyfish Jam, jellyfish were being strum. Also, "smart Patrick" strums a jellyfish shortly after the joke is asked.
  • When Spongebob first finds Patrick's head (which turns out to be brain coral) he finds it just next to the cliff and Patrick comes in from off stage, but at the end of the episode Spongebob says that Patrick was just next to the cliff and that he found the head further away from the cliff (presumably where Patrick wandered in from).
