Patrick Neeson Lynch

Patrick Neeson Lynch (March 10, 1817 - February 26, 1882) was the Catholic bishop of Charleston, South Carolina, during the American Civil War.
He was born in Ireland, and ordained as priest in Charleston in 1840 and ordained as bishop in 1858. On February 20, 1864 he was named by President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America to be its delegate to the Holy See which maintains diplomatic relations in the name of Vatican City. However, when he presented the request for recognition of the Confederacy, Pope Pius IX would not recognize a government that advocated the expansion of slavery.
He was the Third Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston which covers all of the state of South Carolina.
