In the 1999 National AFL Draft Bowden was a fourth round selection (no.58 overall) to the Western Bulldogs. In his time at the Bulldogs, he wasn't given enough chances, with very few games to his name. At the end of the 2005 AFL season the Western Bulldogs traded Patrick Bowden to the Richmond Tigers in return for the 55th pick in the 2005 AFL Draft, which the Western Bulldogs used to select Brett Montgomery.
