Patriarch John II (I) of Alexandria

His Holiness John I was the 29th Pope of Alexandria (29 September 496 - 29 April 505). He is known as John II by the Eastern Orthodox Church due to acknowledgment of first Patriarch John.
He was born in Alexandria to Christian parents. He became a monk in the Nitrian Desert and was ordained Pope of Alexandria against his will, following the departure of Pope Athanasius II. He was ordained on the first day of Paopi, 213 A.M. (29 September 496 A.D.) He was the first Alexandrine Pope to be chosen from among the monks.
The days of Pope John I were days of peace in Egypt. He departed on 4 Pashons, 221 A.M. (29 April 505 A.D.) He spent 8 years and 7 months on the Throne of Saint Mark.
