Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Germanus I was Patriarch of Constantinople from 715 to 730.
Appointed by Emperor Anastasius II, Patriarch Germanus negotiated his abdication after the victory of Theodosius III in 715.
In 730 Germanus resigned rather than subscribe to the iconoclast decree of Emperor Leo III, which he felt could not be enacted without an ecumenical council. He was replaced by an iconoclast patriarch, Anastasius, and died a few years later.
