Pattanayak or Patnaik is the most popular and powerful Karana last name from the state of Orissa, India. It is formed from two words Pato (is related to literature) and Naik (ie., authority). Hence the family origin is from the ancestors who were very good at literature.Karana is a cast next to brahmin in orissa. Other people in this cast are Mohanty and Kanungo.

People with this surname Patnaik were good at math and literature. So, most of the ancestors under this family were poets, educational chiefs and also were handling the positions such as village karanam (some authoritative role overseeing villages).

Of late the state has seen several illustrious personalities who have been patnaiks. The political scenario has also been dominated by several patnaiks cutting across party boundaries. To name a few, Biju Patnaik, J B Patnaik, Jagannath Patnaik, Niranjan Patnaik and of course Navin Patnaik.
