[edit] Releases

The original Pastel Chime, released in 1998, is often referred to be representative one of early AliceSoft works. It features school love stories with traditional style of CRPG, and some new concepts like fusion of role-playing games and dating sims. For example, being friendly with girls is important to get over the "quests" since help of them is needed to go through dungeons, defeat enemy monsters, etc. This was a fresh idea in early years of both CRPG and Eroge in Japan.

In June 17, 2005, AliceSoft released the sequel named Pastel Chime Continue. Many game stores in Japan featured this[1], and response of market leaded the company to make PasCha C++, a side story of Pastel Chime Continue with extra episodes.

[edit] Characters

[edit] Pastel Chime Continue

  • Nagihara Yūki (薙原ユウキ)
The protagonist, and a player character. He made a trouble in Private Falneze AS, thus wanted to be transferred. Fortunately, Kōryō accepted his application for transfer, and he've became a 3rd grader of Kōryō. His red hair is not a natural color, and is related with the very trouble in Falneze AS. His class as an adventurer isn't decided yet(entrusted to players).
  • Rindō Rina (竜胆リナ)
Yūki's childhood friend, whom Yūki part from to enter the Private Falneze AS, and met again as he is transferred to Kōryō. As a beginning magician, she is a would-be "Teen idol Magician". She is warmhearted, popular among friends girl but picky only to Yūki.
  • Saika S. Falnese (斎香・S・ファルネーゼ)
Daughter of Falneze, a first grade meister, whose name is the most famous weapon maker in the Rubens continent. Like Yūki, she was a student of Falneze AS, and Yūki thought her as his idol privately. With unknown reason she is also transferred to Kōryō. She has a top school grade and experienced skill of swords but poor worldly knowledge. This causes various comic situations.
  • Phil Ehart (フィル・イハート)
An vigorous elf girl with a characteristic somewhat brown skin and twin tailed hairstyle, who is to be a shinjutsushi(神術士, literally 'godly technician'), whose main ability is healing. • Lucy Minseard (ルーシー・ミンシアード)
Another elf girl who is to be a scout, formally dojutsushi(盗術士, literally 'thief technician'). She is suspected to have saved Yūki's life. Everyday she tries to find lucky item with a black cat named Nīsan(which can mean 'elder brother' in Japanese) but she herself has no luck. Being not so affable, people near her except for Yūki shuns her.

[edit] Background

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

There are two big continents in the universe of Pastel Chime, called Rubens and Colwayd respectively. Rubens is homeland of the human and elves with complex history, having 7 countries currently.

For a long time in history, the Sea of Rhye, which divides Rubens and Colwayd, was covered with a dense fog, which makes the ocean voyage impossible. One day, this fog have suddenly disappeared. In the game it is introduced as if there are several (probably magical) reason, in suggestive manner. Anyway, people excitedly started to explore the Sea of Rhye, and discovered the new continent, Colwayd. This was the opening of the Age of Adventure. Huge amount of adventurers have sailed.

Although in early days this adventure boom has sacrificed a lot of adventurers without enough preparation, People believes that the exploration of new continent is now stabilized, and the world seems to be peaceful. However, there are symptoms of doom, like an ancient prophecy about "Reincarnation of Prince of the Darkness" hidden by the governments of Rubens, and a conspiracy planned by students of Private Falneze AS to overthrow the Adventurers' Guild, etc.

It has never been clearly shown that what Rubens actually is. In the game it is told that Rubens is an original, fictional world with its own history, but there are real world materials like bus, or mobile phone in it. This is not limited to things but the entire civilization and culture is partly taken from real world. Also, the name of characters varies in terms of the language; in Pastel Chime, Kaito seems like a Japanese name, but Muselle is rather a European one. In Pastel Chime Continue, even a name with mixed language appears; Saika S. Falneze(斎香・S・ファルネーゼ) is neither a Japanese name nor non-Japanese name.
