Pasanauri

Pasanauri — small town in Dusheti region of the Republic of Georgia. It is located about 90 kilometers north of Tbilisi, on the Georgian Military Road. Built in the 19th century, it is a picturesque place with beautiful landscape. It is surrounded by the Aragvi River, and the Caucasian mountains. The river Aragvi is the most popular place in Pasanauri for summer vacations. Average winter temperature is 0 degrees Celsius, but often falls below 10 degrees Celsius.

Apart from its beautiful landscape, Pasanauri is famous for its mineral water, hiking routes, handcrafted items, and food. Pasanauri has arguably the best Georgian Khinkali (spicy meet dumplings).

The main public institutions are a hospital, kindergarten, school, musical school, and several small hotels. Due to its location on the Georgian Military Road, Pasanauri prospered as one of the popular tourist destinations in the Caucasus during Soviet times. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, tourism declined and the town lost its main source of income. The Gudauri skiing resort lies within 30 kilometers north.

One of the most respected citizens in Pasanauri is Doctor Nino Chokheli, who established the Oshpiteli Hospital for the mountain region of Georgia. She served the community faithfully and with a great deal of dedication for more than 50 years. She is respected among 3 generations of the Pasanauri people and the surrounding village areas. The hospital was honored in her name.

Most people in Pasanauri are bilingual and speak both native Georgian and Russian. Historically, crime rates were low and remain so compared to the rest of the country.
