[edit] Somali Land 2006 10 26

Regarding the Somali Land 2006 10 26 map, I assume you mean the districts when you speak of subdivisions. Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are all divided up into regions and districts, and on my map I deal only with those containing a Somali majority, which is the Northeast Region of Kenya, all of Somalia and the Somali region of Ethiopia. This division is less meaningful however than at the District level. Districts in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya relate to what in premodern Europe you would call a province: that is the area of land that is under the direct economic and political influence of a particular city. In poor or very rural or pastoral areas, these districts can be very large, while in densely populated areas where many important cities are located, the districts will be very small. Somali and Kenyan regions tend to be quite small, no more than 6 districts per region, and some only 2 or 3. Ethiopian regions are huge, the Somali region has more than 20 districts, but that's because Ethiopia terms "Region" for greater ethnoreligious zone, and the equivalent of Somali or Kenyan regions is present as an intermediary subdivision termed a "Zone".
