[edit] History
Parramatta station is one of Sydney's oldest. Sydney's first line connected Sydney and Parramatta Junction near Granville and opened on 26 September 1855. It was extended to the current Parramatta station on 4 July 1860.(www.nswrail.net)
The station was proposed to link to Chatswood via the Parramatta Rail link; however, with the demise of the link between Parramatta and Chatswood, the station was given a major upgrade nonetheless. In late 2003, work began on a new transport interchange which linked the station to the neighbouring Westfield Parramatta, Sydney's largest shopping centre. The works included upgrading the station, providing more access to commuters, and constructing a new bus interchange. On 19 February 2006 the interchange was opened to the public.
[edit] Station configuration
The station consists of a centre island platform (platforms 3 and 4) and 2 side platforms (platforms 1 and 4). The western end sits atop a viaduct above street level. The entry concourses are slightly below the street level. The western concourse connects to shops and the bus interchange, which caters for local bus services as well as services for the Liverpool-Parramatta Rapid Bus Transitway and North-West T-way (T-Ways). A set of trailing points on the eastern side of the station side allows 'down' trains on the Down Main track to terminate on platform 4 and return towards the city on the 'Up Main' track. Likewise, a set of trailing points on the western side allows 'Up' trains on the Up Main track to terminate on platform 3 and return towards the west on the 'Down Main' track.
Parramatta is an Easy Access station.
