Parma Violets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parma Violets are violet flavoured sweets manufactured by Derbyshire based Swizzels Matlow; they are a kind of hard candy, similar in shape and consistency to the Fizzers and Love Hearts products from the same company, but without the fizziness generated from the tartaric acid or malic acid reaction with a carbonate that those sweets possess.

Parma Violets are sold in two forms: the traditional small size, slightly smaller than a five pence piece, and the giant size, around the size of a British penny. They are in tablet form, the smaller ones being regular cylindrical tablets and the larger ones having a bowl-shape in the middle. Their taste is somewhat reminiscent of candied violets, an unusual and acquired taste for most people, and memorable enough to lend them their nostalgia value.

Parma Violets are suitable for vegetarians.
