Parker Baronets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There have been seven Parker Baronetcies created, of which two are still extant. All were created in the Baronetage of England, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom, depending on the date of creation (before and after 1707 and 1801). Though none of the different families of baronets were related, several supplied a number of flag officers to the Royal Navy.

The first baronetcy was created for Philip Parker on 16 July 1661. It became extinct in 1741 upon the death of his grandson.

The second baronetcy was created for Robert Parker on 22 May 1674. It became extinct in 1750, upon the death of his grandson.

The third baronetcy was created for Hugh Parker, an alderman of London, on 1 July 1681. The baronetcy descended by special remainder to his nephew, Sir Henry Parker, 2nd Baronet, upon his death in 1697. He married Margaret Hyde and was the ancestor of the various individuals named Hyde Parker, several of whom became noted naval officers.

The fourth baronetcy was created on 13 January 1783 for Sir Peter Parker, also an eminent naval officer, though unrelated. He was known for his service in the American Revolution. It became extinct in 1869 upon the death of his grandson, Admiral Sir Charles Parker, 5th Baronet.

The fifth baronetcy was created on 24 July 1797 for William Parker (18th century admiral) for his service at the Battle of Cape St Vincent. Though unrelated to the previous two, he also enjoyed a long naval career, retiring as a vice-admiral. The baronetcy became extinct in 1903.

The sixth baronetcy was created on 18 December 1844 for Sir William Parker, a distant relative of the Earl of Macclesfield, but not of the other baronets. He, too, was a naval officer, and commanded British naval forces in China in the First Opium War. Sir William Lorenzo Parker, 3rd Baronet was an Olympic medalist.

The seventh baronetcy was created on 21 June 1915 for Gilbert Parker, a Member of Parliament and novelist, and became extinct upon his death in 1932.
