[edit] Song Profile
"Parade" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 2000 - 2001 sessions for 'beautifulgarbage'. During writing and recording the song went through several name changes including "Piss On Your Parade" and "Always Tomorrow".
"Parade" is a return-of-sorts to the sound of earlier Garbage tracks with its sonic assault of loop and distorted guitars, with a warm and uplifting carefree groove.
At 150 bpm, it the fastest track Garbage had recorded at that time, a title that held until "Why Do You Love Me" was released in 2005.
[edit] Live Performances
"Parade" was debuted live on 18th January 2002 at the band's Big Day Out performance in Auckland, New Zealand. It remained a staple part of the main live set throughout the subsequent dates of the 'beautifulgarbage' world tour.
During live performances the song is extended, with a fourth chorus, where Shirley sings the lyrics an octave higher, and the outro is extended to which Shirley often ad-libs 'Get your freak on", from the Missy Elliot song 'Get Ur Freak On'
Shirley often dedicated this song to the 'boys' in the band, in tribute to their dedication to the group, and for putting up with her. She also dedicated this track to her little sister, Sarah, at the song's last performance at the London Electric Ballroom in August 2002.
"Parade" has not been performed at on the Bleed Like Me tour as yet, however it has been reported that the band have performed the song on sounchecks, so the song may still work its way into the band's live sets.
[edit] Trivia
"Parade" appears on the soundtrack to the PlayStation game "ATV Offroad Fury 2" which was released in November 2002.
"Parade" is the theme track to the 2004 movie "D.E.B.S.", however a downbeat electronica cover version of the song by Disposal Unit appears on the movie's released soundtrack album.
"Parade" has been played in the background on UK soap operas 'EastEnders' and 'Coronation Street'
[edit] Parade quote, unquote
Shirley Manson: "It's the closest we've ever got to anthemic hysteria. A call to arms to join a movement that believes in being an individual. It's about being prepared to stand up for what you believe in."
