Paperwing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A paperwing is a form of aerial transportation in Garth Nix's Old Kingdom fantasy novel trilogy Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen.

Paperwings are, as their name suggests, aircraft made of paper, and are used in the Old Kingdom (the area of the world where Charter Magic still functions). They are usually decorated in bright colours and made to somewhat resemble birds, looking rather like a canoe with wings and painted eyes. They are somewhat sentient, and spells can be whistled to instill free will into them. Similar to a glider in function, they are flown by a Charter Mage using a combination of Charter magic and whistling to manipulate the winds. A paperwing can hold up to two people and some cargo. Because of their reliance on magic, they cannot fly far beyond the border of the Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre.
