Watch Mare Nostrum: Panerai

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Watch Mare Nostrum: Panerai is an original prototype watch designed in 1943 for Italian Navy deck officers based on the design for torpedo timers. The wartime design was shelved until 1993 when a limited number of blue faced watches were commissioned (some 460). The American actor Sylvester Stallone was instrumental in Panerai launching a model called Slytech mare nostrum. Once Vendome took over Panerai in 1995 the watch lasted just one more year until it was pulled, it was re-released in blue, white and black. The 1993 model being closest to the original prototype. The watch's rarity and maritime history makes it a highly desirable timepiece and all versions are sought after by watch collectors, but particularly the Pre-Vendome model, distinguishable by the Km/h scale on the tachymetre.
