When Corner's pilot episode aired, Barbie Xu bet that Corner's ratings would hover around 2.9. Although she underestimated Corner's viewership, the drama was still no match for Hua Yang, which ended up with a rating of ____. Hua Yang's 6th episode was the drama's first to exceed ratings of 4.0; by the 12th episode, the drama had already cracked 5.0. During its 15-episode run, Hua Yang never relinquished its ratings crown.

During the 2000 summer holidays, Ren Jiaxuan and Tian Fuzhen lined up to participate in "Cruel Stage", a segment on Jacky Wu's show, "TV Citizen". Selina, who just graduated from senior high school, would regularly watch "Cruel Stage". In order for her sister to get a chance to win some prize money, in addition to seeing Jacky Wu in person, Selina went with her sister to register. However, the line was so long that by the time the Ren sisters registered, it was already 9 p.m. After Selina sang Coco Lee's "Before I Fall In Love", employees of the show asked her to write her name and the name of the song on an already-full list of entries. Employees told her that she already got past the preliminary round of over 1000 registrants, and was now in the round of 50. In the crowd, there was another girl named Tian Fuzhen, 18 years old, from Hsinchu, who was participating in her first singing competition. Her mother wouldn't have anything to do with getting a job at the age of 18; besides, at the rate she was going on shopping sprees, Fuzhen thought about earning money from contests. Her classmates encouraged her to register; by the time she got past the preliminary round, she was registered in the next round as number 1. With her father by her side, Ren Jiaxuan was in the waiting room, watching the contest next door on TV. Number 43 was the last to participate, because seven contestants forfeited. Contestants were filtered using red and green nails; red nails would signify failure, while green nails ensured entrance to the next round. The contest's atmosphere was tense and pressure-packed, but Selina got into the next round, singing Elva Hsiao's "The Closest Stranger".
Tian Fuzhen would also qualify for one of seven spots in the next round, which would be aired during "Cruel Stage". After she sang Shunza's "Write A Song", Tian Fuzhen felt that she didn't put enough effort in singing. After the contest, when she met Ren Jiaxuan, she felt as if she saw a mirror image. Ren Jiaxuan looked similar, and was also slightly introverted. On Cruel Stage, Tian Fuzhen chose Kit Chan's "Love You" to impress the judges, having sung the song numerous times on KTV. However, on this occasion, Tian Fuzhen hurried her performance and ended up forgetting much of the song's lyrics. Surprisingly, the judges let her go on to the next round and rewarded her with NT$10,000.
On "Cruel Stage", the record company declared that they would only sign one person to a contract, and selected Ren Jiaxuan.
On a rainy afternoon, Chen Jiahua and her little brother registered for HIM International's singing contest when they heard that the company was looking for new people. However, during registration, they realized that the contest was only open to females. Chen Jiahua looked like a boy, so she thought that she wouldn't be able to fit the gender requirement. She didn't even want to register, not to mention stand in line for hours on a rainy day, so she and her brother took pictures at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial. Chen Jiahua's second sister, Chen Jiawei, worked at a government business, called to see how things were going, told Jiahua to immediately go back and register, and said that singing Bon Jovi's "It's My Life" would ensure victory. Chen Jiahua ran all the way back; after about 18 minutes, it was her turn. She loudly sang Mayday's "Gentle and soft", which calmed everyone in the judging room.
Once HIM International's Huang Songshun heard her singing, Chen Jiahua was immediately asked if she wanted to participate in the Beauty and Singing Contest, which was being hosted on the "Cruel Stage" segment of the show "TV Citizen". On August 20 in New York, New York, Chen Jiahua was number six. However, she ended up not only being late, but forgot her ID as well, which earned the ire of HIM's employees. Chen wore clothes that made her look like a boy. However, she was the first to compete, and consequently earned the praise of musician Liu Tianjian, ensuring her a place in the next round.
When Tian Fuzhen first saw Chen Jiahua, the former thought that the latter looked like a monkey, jumping about, and wondered whether this girl was a lesbian or not. When crew members filmed contestants and asked each of them who they thought would win, Chen jumped up and said "Me! Me! I'm the one who'll win!" leaving her opponents with a confident impression. Ren Jiaxuan went on to the next round by singing "pretty" and Shunza's "Write a Song". In the next round, she was originally slated to sing "Red Beans", but her practice session didn't go too well, so she ended up singing Shunza's "Going Home".
On August 22, HIM notified the contestants that they would have to undergo further training. They took dancing lessons. Tian Fuzhen, upon seeing Chen Jiahua, thought that she was a boy. Tian and Chen danced well, but Ren Jiaxuan had begun to falter.
Once the contestants reached the TV portion, Tian Fuzhen was slated to perform first, followed by Ren Jiaxuan. Chen Jiahua didn't have the money to purchase a new wardrobe, so she went into the TV portion wearing a T-shirt and jeans.
In the finals, Jacky Wu forgot the order of contestants, so he called on Ren Jiaxuan first. In the TV portion of the contest, judges would turn on lights when flaws in singing were identified; three lights would lead to elimination. Although Ren Jiaxuan almost fell, the judges gave her two lights, one short of elimination. One of the judges who turned on a light was Ren's future labelmate, Power Station's You Qiuxing; he said that she looked flustered, wasn't experienced or cooperative. Once she left the stage, Ren Jiaxuan cried, hugging Chen Jiahua in the meantime.
