Panopticon (UCL building)

The Panopticon is the new museum building for University College London in central London, England, also designed to provide a ceremonial entrance on the university's east side, which is presently lacking. (On its completion, the UCL building will thus have entrances on Gower Street, Gordon Street and Gordon Square.) It will have space for temporary exhibitions, a café, lecture facilities, a reading room and a display area for the University of London's collection of rare books and manuscripts.
The building will be a new home for the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. Three floors will be devoted to the Petrie Museum, and for the first time the entire collection will be on display or in visible storage.
It received planning permission from the London Borough of Camden on 2 December 2004, construction work is intended to commence on site in 2007, and the Panopticon is scheduled to open early in 2009.
Its patron is Sean Connery[citation needed].
